Pianist Joel Schoenhals is one of Ann Arbor’s most beloved and respected musicians. He returns to the House after recent sold-out shows to offer the world premiere of a stunning new work commissioned under a grant from Michigan Humanities. Etudes for Piano, written by Navajo composer Connor Chee, is a soaring and intimate musical reflection of Navajo life, culture, and spirituality. It is followed by Unbroken, inspired by WWII Navajo code talkers and Shí Naashá, which captures the spirit of resilience and homecoming of the Navajo people after four years of imprisonment by the US Government. Many Ann Arborites remember the 2020 Schoenhals-Chee collaboration which led to Sandpaintings for Piano. Witness this latest expression of groundbreaking music. And as an added bonus, Connor Chee will be in the House!
