PAUL KELLER HOUSE CALLS

WITH ADAM MOSLEY AND CARY KOCHER // FEATURING THE MUSIC OF GEORGE SHEARING

Local jazz favorites Paul Keller (string bass) and Cary Kocher (vibraphone) are joined by pianist Adam Mosley (who Paul dubs “the young genius on piano”), for a swingin’ affair featuring the music of George Shearing.

For years, Paul and Cary have been carrying a torch for the charm and wit of Shearing’s music. Sir George Shearing, OBE was an amazing jazz pianist and bandleader, born blind in London in 1919. He emigrated to the USA in 1947 and became popular nationally in 1949 with a recording of September In The Rain by his new quintet. Shearing was a proponent of the Great American Songbook, and also contributed some 300 compositions to the standard jazz repertoire. Shearing was a master of harmony who also possessed incredible technical facility and command of the bebop language. His innovations as arranger brought traditional jazz, classical and big band concepts into the small group setting. A highly recognizable signature sound – vibes and guitar on melody, with the piano in locked-hands harmony – knits the ensemble together in a delightful, swinging fashion: it’s that “Shearing Sound.”

Paul, Cary and Adam will also perform recent Keller compositions with engaging titles that we can all relate to including Lockdown, Get A Haircut, I’ve Missed You, It Could Be Worse, Cary’s Capers, and Art And Soul (for WEMU’s Lisa Barry).
