Detroit's down and dirty swing band - Planet D Nonet - is back in The House with Crescent City Meets Kansas City, featuring music from these two great capitals of swing. Legendary pioneers of black music emanated from New Orleans - musicians such as Jellyroll Morton, Louis Armstrong & Danny Barker. The band's "Crescent City" portion of this concert features the music of the latter: Danny Barker - a singer/songwriter and banjo/guitar player, along with his wife, the blues singer, Blue Lu Barker (Lu put the "blue" in blues)! Over in Kansas City, as the country was in the depths of depression, KC was swinging hard due to semi-legal vice. It drew talent like Count Basie, Lester Young & others to the city. Planet D Nonet celebrates the contributions of Kansas City guitarist/trombonist/arranger, Eddie Durham, who wrote for Benny Moten, Count Basie, Jimmy Lunceford and Glenn Miller. As an added treat, the band will also perform songs by Julia Lee, a great KC blues stylist. Founded by drummer RJ Spangler and trumpeter James O’Donnell, The Planet D Nonet is about swing, blues, space-age jazz and classic American songs all served with plenty of good humor. Voted Outstanding Traditional Jazz Artist/Group by the 2018 Detroit Music Awards, these musicians will get your heart pumping and your toes tapping!
